My version of the first time I met Tyler….

I was living in Colonial House apartment #404, here in school at BYUI, with five other girls. Kate (Marshall) Quayle was my roommate and the college life was new to both of us. My apartment got along well for the most part although, like any other apartment of six girls, we had our fair share of “tiffs”. We were living in the 58th ward boundaries and of course church was the ultimate time for scoping out any worth-while “hotties”. Each girl’s apartment was assigned a coordinating guys apartment in the ward to be part of the Family Home Evening group. Since BYUI is notorious for its ratio of 2:1, girls to guys; our apartment was the “lucky” one who was assigned two guys apartments to our FHE group.
Our first group of FHE guys consisted of 4 older and probably not the most attractive (in our eyes) guys. They were all over the age of twenty-three, were balding or had finished balding and physically they were odd shapes and sizes as well as heights. Later we found out that one of them was engaged, so as far as hooking up with any of them, it was out of the question. Although none of our first FHE brothers were what we were looking for in the relationship department, they were really kind to us. We met with them religiously each week for FHE where our FHE “dad” and “mom” assigned: who gave the lesson, what the activity was and sometimes who made the treats. It wasn’t until a few weeks into the semester that we actually met our second group of FHE “brothers”. We decided to make Sloppy Joes and invite them over for dinner with us and our first group of FHE brothers.
Monday night came around and so did 6:00 (the designated time for dinner) and the second group was no where to be found. We figured, oh well, and started dishing up food and chatting amongst ourselves. I believe it was about a half and hour later that we got a knock on the door and in walked three guys who announced they were infact our second group of FHE brothers. After we offered them some food and seats they told us their names were Tyler and Darryl Kelly (actual brothers) and Tyler Howard. We learned a little about each one and immediately, our apartment knew that these guys were more “our type”. They were younger and joked a lot and of course, they were a little bit more “with it” than our first group. The first time that they all came over to our apartment that night I wasn’t stricken with Tyler at first, but noted that he was cute.

After we ate, talked and had some sort of “spiritual lesson” the second FHE brothers invited us to go over to their apartment to hang out. I was up for it, as well as Kate and two of our other roommates (Kara Frenzel and Britany (Cox) Bragg). Mostly we spent time with both of the Tylers. Tyler Kelly, Kara and I talked on the couch and then joined my other roommates and Tyler Howard over at the island in the kitchen for some amazing “fortune telling.” Britany (being the most gullible one in our apartment) was an easy target for Tyler Howard. He randomly drew up cards and gave a reading for each one. They were ridiculous (who knows how Britany actually thought he was being realistic in any sort of way) but she did. Maybe that’s why the night was so fun. We were all entertained by Tyler’s fortune telling skills, the incredulous stories that he weaved out of thin air, and Britany’s belief in every word of it. Finally when it was getting close to curfew and “girls out” Tyler Howard drove us back to our apartment. After we all got out of the car and were talking, we concluded that we hit the jackpot this time with our new FHE brothers.
